WordWeb is a comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links.
Latest version 5 – now with fast one-click look up, web-reference tabs, bookmarks, Vista support, and more
- One-click look up – You can now look up words in essentially any program with just one click: hold down the control key and click with the mouse. No need to select the word first (unless you wish to replace it with a synonym). The hot key can be changed as you wish.
- Web reference tabs – The main WordWeb database can be used while you are offline. However if you are online you can now also quickly check web references, for example Wikipedia or your other favorite site. The web references are displayed in tabs near the top of the window: just click a tab to look up the word online and see the result right inside the WordWeb window.
- Bookmarks – There’s a new Bookmark menu that you can use to bookmark words. There’s also a Random option to look up a random bookmark to help you learn vocabulary.
- Basic English – WordWeb has a large and comprehensive database, but often you want to find the clearest most widely understood word for a particular sense. There is now an option to most common words in bold, so you can easily choose words that will be widely understood even by non-native English speakers.
- Sound – There’s a new button on the WordWeb toolbar to use Windows’ speech engine to pronounce the look-up word. You can also install optional sound files to look up reliable pronunciations for many words. This is in addition to a text representation of over 70 000 pronunciations.
- Improved database – There are many thousands of new senses, synonyms and clarifications. Sense ordering is now improved so the most common usage of a word is shown first: for example ‘Brave’ is usually used as an adjective, so now this sense is listed first.
- Customizable cross-references – In WordWeb Pro 5 you can customize the list of web-reference tabs and the list of third-party dictionaries shown under the X-ref button. If WordWeb doesn’t automatically detect another dictionary you have installed, you can now add a link yourself.
